Folk Alliance International, now in KC!

Folk Alliance International, now in KC!

Folk AllianceLouis Meyers’, founder of SXSW, has just relocated to Kansas City and brought the Folk Alliance with him.  Up until last year the Folk Alliance was located in Memphis, TN, now they have moved to Kansas City and they are bringing lots of people with them.  The Folk Alliance conference draws more than 2,000 participants for workshops, lectures. showcases, and panels.  The first conference is scheduled for February 19-23, 2014.

ShawnHansonCharlotte Street is pleased to host Sycamore House, a series of performances presented and curated by Kansas City composer and musician, Shawn Hansen. This June 19th showcase is the fourth in the series and features a summer medley of avant garde song cycles using texts by Burroughs and Borges, meditative electro-acoustic improvisation, and modular synthesizer sound-scapes performed by local and out of town artists: VoicehandlerBlue Communion:ISAM, and Llambs.

(D) Construction is a multimedia installation unveiled through video and live construction.  Music composed by Shao Zheng and Charlie Mcgraw; performed by Emily Foltz, Russell Thorpe, Shao Zheng, Kristina Strader, and Charlie Mcgraw.  Choreography and costuming by Brock Bryan with visual art from Kelly Powell and Liz Black with performances by Brock Bryan and Kristina Strader.

Artist INC Facilitator, Erin McGrane heads south to “Escape to Create”

Victor and Penny (aka Jeff Freling and Erin McGrane) hit the road to Seaside Florida for the Escape to Create Residency.

“Since its founding in September 2010, the guitar/ukulele/vocal duo has released two albums: “Victor & Penny” in 2011 and “Side by Side” in 2012. Once they hit the road in 2011, interest in their take on early 20th century pop and pop jazz has taken off. Last year alone, they logged 150 live shows in 22 states and put 45,000 miles on their car…”

French-American Jazz Exchange Application Now Available

The online application for the next grant round of the French-American Jazz Exchange (“FAJE”) program is now available. A program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation and FACE (“French-American Cutlural Exchange”), FAJE supports projects designed collaboratively by French and American professional musicians that encourage artistic exploration, foster intercultural dialogue, and contribute to the dynamism of jazz. Projects eligible for support can include creative residencies, composition, recording, performances, and other activities that develop new professional relationships and audiences. Projects may include jazz artists in France and the United States investigating forms other than jazz with artists who work in different music genres.…

Black House Collective: Call for Musicians: Winter Workshop 2013

Black House Collective is now accepting inquiries for their Winter Workshop 2013

The Black House Improvisors’ Collective endeavors to help musicians work together to provide each other resources in which to develop and support each other and the Kansas City music scene.  All instruments are welcome but players must be at a college level of proficiency. Instrumentalists do not have to be composers in order to participate.

In this workshop BHC will be collaborating with the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art’s “Innovation Project.”  The first meeting will be at the museum to view the exhibit of ancient art, Egyptian through Greek time periods, and the participants who will be composing will select art pieces to serve as inspiration for their compositions.…
