Arist INC Fellow Rachelle Gardner-Roe has been awarded the commission for the inaugural Feminist Awards for A.I.R. Gallery’s 2016 Spring Benefit in Brooklyn, NY. Advocating for women in the visual arts since 1972, A.I.R. Gallery is a permanent exhibition space that supports an open exchange of ideas and risk–taking by women artists in order to provide support and visibility. Gardner-Roe’s work was selected to create original sculptures to honor and celebrate the leadership of individuals and organizations who support the success of women and girls. The awardees include Judith Bernstein, co-founding artist of A.I.R. Gallery and activist in the Guerilla Girls and the Art Workers’ Coalition; Fairygodboss, an online resource of company policy and culture by women for women; Lenny Letter, an online communal space for all things feminist, co-founded by Lena Dunham and Jenni Conner; and Kimberly Drew, creator of the Black Contemporary Art Tumblr and current Associate Online Community Producer at The Met. The awards will embody Gardner-Roe’s unique method of combining the historical and modern through lace and resin. Yielding forms that are metaphors for life as richly complex beings, the golden sculptures are similar, but unique, honoring both individuality and a shared experience.
